The Easiest Way to Get Rid of an Old Mattress in Christchurch

Old mattresses are one of the most awkward things to get rid of. They're big, they're floppy, they don't fit in a car, and — annoyingly — they can't just go out with your normal rubbish. If you've got one leaning against the garage wall waiting for a plan, here are your options in Christchurch.

Can a mattress go in my kerbside bin?

No. A mattress won't fit in your Christchurch City Council red bin (general rubbish), and it can't go in the yellow (recycling) or green (organics) bins either. Trying to squash bits of it into the red bin over several weeks isn't worth the effort, and it usually won't be collected if it's overflowing or jammed.

Option 1: Take it to an EcoDrop transfer station

Option 2: Recycle it

A surprising amount of a mattress can actually be recycled — the steel springs, timber frame, foam and fibres can all be separated and reused rather than buried. If keeping it out of landfill matters to you, look for a mattress recycling service rather than sending it straight to the tip. It's a better outcome for something that's mostly recoverable materials.

Option 3: Donate it (if it's in good nick)

Be realistic here: most charities and op shops won't take used mattresses for hygiene and safety reasons, even clean ones. If yours is genuinely near-new, it's worth a quick phone call to check, but don't be surprised if the answer is no. A better bet for a good-condition mattress is a giveaway on Facebook Marketplace or a local community page.
