How to Dispose of a Fridge or Whiteware in Christchurch

Fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers — whiteware is heavy, bulky, and unlike a lot of household junk, some of it can't just be tossed. Here's how to get rid of it properly in Christchurch, including a couple of free options people often miss.

Fridges and freezers must be degassed first

This is the big one. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases that are harmful to the environment if they're released. By law these gases have to be removed by a qualified person before the appliance is scrapped or dumped — you can't legally just leave it at the kerb or bury it. Any proper disposal route will either degas it for you or ask that it's been done.

Option 1: Scrap metal recyclers (often free)

Whiteware is mostly steel and other metals, which makes it valuable to scrap metal yards. Christchurch has several metal recyclers who will take fridges, washers and dryers — sometimes at no charge, because they recover the metal. Give them a call first to check whether they handle the degassing and whether they'll take it as a drop-off. This is usually the greenest option, since almost all of the appliance gets recycled.

Option 2: EcoDrop transfer stations

The Council's EcoDrop stations (Parkhouse Road, Styx Mill and Bromley) accept whiteware for a fee, with an extra charge or requirement for degassing fridges and freezers.

Option 3: Donate or sell it (if it still works)

If the appliance is in good working order, don't scrap it — someone will want it. Try op shops and reuse stores like the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, or list it on Facebook Marketplace. A working fridge or washing machine can be genuinely useful to a family or a student flat.
